New five-year Nursing and Midwifery strategy

Published: | Nursing

‘Leading the Way’ is the new Nursing and Midwifery Strategy for all our nurses and midwives across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), which includes our Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), over the next 5 years.

Launched in May 2025, the strategy is supported by a transformative approach to listening, known as the ‘Big Conversation’, and underpinned by close collaboration of nurses, midwives, and healthcare support workers.

In addition, each nursing and midwifery family will agree and formalise a ‘Plan on a Page’ to ensure their priorities align with the ‘Leading the Way’ Strategy.

September saw the beginning of the implementation of the ‘Leading the Way’ Nursing and Midwifery Strategy across our HSCP.

From September to April 2026, our nurses and midwives are taking part in ‘Big Conversations’ with their local champions on each of the four priority areas in a bi-monthly cycle, beginning with leadership in September and October.

This will be followed by professional practice in November/December.
In the new year there will be focus on safety and quality in January/February and culture and collaboration in March/April.

Our HSCP’s Interim Chief Nurse, Lorraine Cribbin held a ‘Big Conversation’ with a number of our professional Nurse Leads and Consultant Nurses on 16 September on leadership.

Lorraine said: “We used three leadership questions for the ‘Big Conversation’. We talked about what good leadership looks like, the support or development opportunities that would help staff feel more confident in a leadership role and what are the HSCP nursing priorities over the next year in relation to leadership.”

The Professional Nurse Leads and Consultant Nurses who attended the Chief Nurse’s ‘Big Conversation’ all shared how they enjoyed the opportunity to take time out of busy practice, reflect on our shared values on leadership and recognise the collective efforts being made around nursing leadership within the HSCP.

Katrina MacFarlane, Community Engagement & Development Officer said: “Glasgow City HSCP Locality Engagement Forums will continue to work alongside our partners to support the implementation of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde's Nursing and Midwifery Strategy 2025-2029. Recognising the role of the LEF within the HSCP we would very much welcome the opportunity for LEF members to be involved and represented within the public/patient reference group.

Local ‘Big Conversations’ champions will arrange and advertise local events.  If staff are unsure who their local champion is they’re on the Nursing and Midwifery sharepoint site for the Strategy under ‘Meet Your Champions’ (can only be accessed by staff).

Staff interested in becoming a champion can register by e-mailing ggc.bigconversationsfeedback@nhs.scot
