Restart - Supporting people with severe and enduring mental health conditions

Published: | Mental Health

Restart is an NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) mental health project that works with Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership’s (HSCP) Community Mental Health Teams.

The project offers recovery-based support for people living with severe and enduring mental health conditions. Trainees are given the opportunity to take part in various vocational training activities to increase self-belief and build resilience. The programme helps around 250 people each year.

Restart’s Peer Support Group has recently become an independent, constituted group called ‘HathawayThere’ and  members have all completed peer2  peer training courses

Sandra Moran, Glasgow City HSCP’s Charge Nurse at Restart, said: “To establish HathawayThere our trainees agreed and allocated group roles and set up a bank account. This allowed the group to apply for funding from Maryhill Housing Association Community Fund and The Invisibles homeless charity. This funding is used to support recovery, activities and outings to allow the group to develop, explore, learn and go on adventures.

“Previously Restart staff, Clyde College and North West Work Development were heavily involved in supporting the group’s development, however the members wanted a more social group and started to meet on their own with no Restart staff involvement. Staff can now signpost service users who are looking for social connection and peer support to the group.

“Becoming an independent constituted group has had a huge effect on the confidence of the members. Not only has it injected new energy into the group, it has also empowered members and fostered a great team spirit. The members continue to develop life and core skills and facilitate their own and other people’s recovery. Members find offering peer support and hope to others to be highly rewarding. The group has become fun, active and organised and looks forward to meeting new members.”

The Group meet on Wednesdays from 1pm to 3pm in Unit 4 Hathaway Street Glasgow.
