Collaboration brings new Breathing Space bench to Gartnavel Hospital
Through a collaborative effort, our Glasgow City Suicide Prevention Partnership and other partners have unveiled a new ‘Breathing Space’ bench at Gartnavel Hospital, near Hyndland railway station. Designed to provide a quiet space for reflection and conversation, the bench aims to support mental wellbeing in the community.
The bench is part of Breathing Space’s ‘Take Some Breathing Space’ initiative and was launched on 28 February with support from Network Rail, Breathing Space, Samaritans, British Transport Police, Police Scotland, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and our Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP).
Breathing Space benches not only encourage open dialogue about mental health but also promote NHS 24’s free, confidential service for individuals experiencing low mood, depression or anxiety. Since 2018, over 60 benches have been installed across Scotland.
Tony McLaren, National Coordinator for Breathing Space, highlighted the importance of collaboration: “These benches serve as a reminder to prioritise mental wellbeing and encourage those who are struggling to seek support through services like Breathing Space.”
Dr. Trevor Lakey, Health Improvement Manager for our HSCP, said: "I very much welcome the installation of this new Breathing Space bench on the Gartnavel Hospital grounds, and I’m sure this sentiment will be shared by many colleagues involved in promoting mental wellbeing and reducing distress in our communities. A physical resource that encourages dialogue, mutual support, reflection and recuperation is a valuable addition, and I thank all the partners who have helped this come to fruition.”
This latest bench offers a meaningful resource to the community, fostering support, reflection and connection for all.
