Glasgow marks International Nurses Day 2023

On 12 May we celebrated International Nurses Day. Nurses across the world were recognised for their commitment, compassion and daily contributions to society.

International Nurses Day was first established in 1974 by the International Council of Nurses and serves to highlight the important role nurses fulfil in health and social care.

This year the theme was ‘Our Nurses. Our Future’. The theme aims to set out the vision and importance of nursing in the future that will address global health challenges and improve global health for all.

In Glasgow, to mark the occasion, our Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) organised a variety of events to acknowledge and say thank you to all the nurses on or around International Nurses Day.

In Rowanpark, a small event was held on International Nurses Day as an opportunity for nurses from different service areas to come together, share information and celebrate their successes. As part of the event, staff enjoyed a hot drink and learned more about our community nursing services from the stall and information displays at the event.

Our Complex Needs Service celebrated by focusing on the importance of wellbeing, therefore, on International Nurses Day they hosted a coffee and cake morning to thank their nursing staff for their incredible dedication and efforts.

In the northeast of the city, our Mental Health nurses gathered in Stobhill Hospital to participate in a fun quiz and come together to share experiences and reflect on their collective achievements.

Sandyford Sexual Health Services also organised an event for staff to come together and celebrate nursing.

Lorraine Cribbin, Chief Nurse for Adult Services said: “I want to send a huge thank you to all our HSCP nurses for your ongoing commitment, professionalism and unique contribution to person-centred care to the citizens of Glasgow. International Nurses Day is a great opportunity to celebrate, come together and be proud of all that you do. I hope you all had a great day, it’s very well deserved”.
