Helping Carers know their Rights - Carer's Act Launch Event

Published: | Carers

Around eighty carers from across Glasgow came to the City Chambers on 3 April for the Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership's event to launch the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 which takes effect from 1 April 2018.

The Act extends and enhances the rights of carers in Scotland to help improve their health and wellbeing, so that they can continue to care, if they so wish, and have a life alongside caring.

Glasgow Integration Joint Board (IJB) Chair, Cllr Mhairi Hunter opened the event and stressed the importance of partnership working with carers. This was followed by Carer Jean Honan who gave a powerful personal testimony of the role of a carer and stressed the importance of a personal approach for each carer.

Susan Orr, Head of Children's Services, South Locality described how the legislation will lead to positive but significant changes to how young carers need to be supported and how the Partnership will focus on a family based personalised approach in supporting young carers, alleviating the caring role and the impact on young people.
