New national campaign encourages people to consider fostering

Published:

A nationwide recruitment campaign to help find more foster carers has been launched, and people across Glasgow are being encouraged to consider if they could provide a safe, supportive foster home for a child or young person.

The Scottish Government campaign aims to support the recruitment of more local authority foster carers. It hopes to raise awareness of the benefits of fostering and encourage more people to consider if they could support a child or young person in the care system.

The Fostering Network estimates that Scotland needs at least 400 additional foster carers.

The campaign – supported by all 32 local authorities - highlights how the ‘ordinary’ – from eating together, to watching TV together – can be ‘extraordinary’ in the life of a child in foster care.

Councillor Chris Cunningham, City Convener for Health, Care and Caring, and Older People, welcomed the campaign to recruit carers and backed the drive to encourage more people to come forward for Glasgow’s children.

He said: “Foster carers play a vital role in supporting the vulnerable children of Glasgow. They provide a caring home for children who, for whatever reason, can’t be cared for by their own parents.

“Fostering can have a really positive impact on a child’s life and can be a rewarding experience for carers. Supporting a child and sharing new experiences with them can enrich the lives of all involved.

“We hope this campaign will attract attention and lead to more foster carers being recruited.”
