Glasgow City HSCP Staff Win National UK Public Health Award

Published: | Health Improvement

Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership’s (HSCP) Health Improvement team has won the award for ‘Digital Initiative’ as part of this year’s UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) Awards.

UKPHR is an independent, dedicated regulator for public health professionals in the United Kingdom, providing professional regulation to public health specialists, specialty registrars and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds, all of whom have a common core of knowledge and skills.

Kenna Campbell, Health Improvement Senior, successfully completed registration with the UKPHR and submitted their nomination to the awards, on behalf of her and her colleagues, Farhat Khan and Sandra Barber, for their cancer screening awareness work with ethnic communities.

Kenna said: “I’m very proud to be on the UK Public Health Register and I value the opportunity to be able to showcase our work in Glasgow City at a UK level. To win the category is an absolute bonus and highlights a great example of partnership working during challenging times.”

Working in partnership with key cancer organisations, staff developed scripts for four animations focusing on Bowel, Breast and Cervical Cancer and HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). The animations were created by Mango Multi Media and translated into five different languages (Arabic, Mandarin, Punjabi, Roma and Urdu) to ensure ethnic communities had access to information about the national cancer screening programmes.

Sandra Barber, Health Improvement Senior said: “This work provided an opportunity to build great working relationships with HSCP colleagues and partner organisations during the pandemic. I’m delighted at the response of those attending the virtual events promoting the videos to colleagues, third sector organisations and further afield health boards. It’s great that other health boards are looking to purchase and utilise the video brochures we developed.”

Supported by English sub-titles, the animations are available to share on social media platforms via the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) YouTube channel and the national NHS Inform website.

Farhat Khan, Health Improvement Practitioner said: “We’ve had some good feedback from communities that have watched the video animations so far. It's great to be working with colleagues and partners to produce accessible health information that contributes towards increasing awareness and informed participation in cancer screening.”

The team also purchased video brochures, which help address digital exclusion and cultural sensitivities. People don’t need to worry about having a social media account or data to use the brochures and can also view without sound. Additional animations have now been produced in English and British Sign Language.

The team received a certificate and acknowledgement that a tree has been planted in honour of the winning project.
