In response to high levels of Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea incidence in under 25s, the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) Free Condoms Service supported College and University fresher’s events and this year's Freshers Festival in September. 

Freshers Festival is the largest student event in Scotland, attracting around 8,000, mostly young people under 25, over two days in Glasgow.  The Free Condoms Service and our Sandyford Sexual Health Service Outreach Team Staff promoted the Free Condoms service, condom use and STI testing at the event. Around 29,000 condoms and 8,000 sachets of lubricant were distributed. STI Testing was also very successful, with 58 tests undertaken over the two days.

A variety of resources, including information leaflets on the Free Condoms Service, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), Safer Sex National Campaign, Postal STI Testing and Archway service were provided to students. 

Mairead Rowan, Health Improvement Senior, Free Condoms Service said: “Our gift bags proved very popular. They included condoms and lubricant, a variety of leaflets and condoms size charts. The size charts were a hit, with students and stall holders coming back for more.” 

She continued: “Key to the success of the event was partnership working. Thanks to the Sandyford Outreach team and wider Sandyford staff who helped us to prepare for the event.”
