Have you ever thought about fostering, but ruled it out because you work?

Published: | Children and Families

If you’re keen to support a vulnerable child but not able to make a full-time commitment, then you could be a short breaks carer with Families for Children – the fostering and adoption service for Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP).

Susan is a short breaks carer with Families for Children, and she’s been looking after a family of three brothers for the past six years. They stay at Susan’s every Tuesday night and then one weekend a month.

Susan said: “The boys are just wonderful, and I look forward to having them here in my home. They’ve become part of my extended family.
“Sometimes families just need a break and I feel so lucky to be part of the boys’ lives. We have dinner together and play games. We honestly laugh so much, and the boys can just be themselves when they’re here.”

Justin who is 11 said: “Susan is lovely, and she cooks the best chicken. We have a great time, and we go out most Saturdays when we stay here. Sometimes we go to Flip Out or the Cinema. We always have fun.”

Max the oldest of three brothers says that he really enjoys spending time with Susan: “She’s a really special person and we can just take it easy when we stay here.”

Ryan the youngest, age 10 is very shy: “I feel at home with Susan and we’re allowed to play games and have fun.”

Susan would encourage other people to come forward as she explains: “It’s such a fantastic thing to do, and it can often keep families together. If you have every thought of helping the families of Glasgow then please find out more. I’ve been a carer for over 22 years and have loved every minute of it.”

Our short breaks carers come from all walks of life. They often work full-time and enjoy the reward of supporting a child and their family for one weekend a month.

If you’re over 21, have a spare bedroom, are patient and caring and would like to enhance a family’s quality of life then please contact us.

Our carers don’t need any special qualifications. The most important qualification is the ability to care for a child in a stable and supportive environment. Full training and support is provided.
