Sandyford pledges to support people with learning disabilities

Published: | Sexual Health

Sandyford specialised sexual health services recently took part in Scottish Learning Disability week 2025 in September. The service pledged to “listen and learn from people with learning disabilities.” This is part of an ongoing programme of work with adults with a learning disability to have a positive relationship and sexual health experience.

Rhoda MacLeod, Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP)’s Head of Adult Services, Sexual Health, Police Custody and Prison Health Care said: “We wish to encourage more people living with a learning disability to attend and have a positive experience at our services in a supported manner. That’s why we’re working with and listening to those with lived experience and those who support them.”

The programme also includes building capacity with those who support adults with a learning disability with their relationship and sexual health.

Jo Zinger, Health Improvement Lead, Sexual Health said: “Each of our HSCP learning disability teams now has a resource box to assist their conversations and workshops, when discussing relationship and sexual health.

“This includes the recently launched easy read male condoms resource developed by Passante, following input from Values into Action, an organisation supporting individuals with learning disabilities. This will be followed by an easy read internal condom resource.

“Good practice guidance and electronic portal are also currently in development. This alongside workshops, training and network sessions are available to further support staff in HSCPs and third sector organisations.”
