Family Nurse Partnership Celebrates 10-year Anniversary

Published:

The Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) is celebrating its 10-year anniversary and marking the occasion by bringing staff and clients together to recognise their decade-long achievements.

The FNP is a person-centred, preventative intervention programme offered to young first-time parents aged 19 or under, and their children. The programme is evidence based and is delivered in the parents’ own homes. It’s designed to cover the first crucial 1,001 days of life, from early pregnancy until the child reaches the age of two years old.

Family nurses are experienced, qualified nurses and midwives who receive additional training at Masters degree level. This enables them to deliver this structured programme to support young parents to build the confidence and skills they need to provide the right support for their baby and give them the best start in life.

There are now seven FNP teams across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde – four of these are based in Glasgow City. To date, 1,060 clients have graduated from the programme.

Feedback from the programme has been overwhelmingly positive with some clients saying:

“I wouldn’t have gotten this far without FNP.”

“Thank you so much, I wish I could have you forever, bittersweet moment letting go of something so special.”

To mark the 10th anniversary of their successful programme, the FNP Team hosted a development day for staff to come together and celebrate their achievements.

In addition to taking the time to thank staff for their contribution, the teams organised an event held on 14 November at the Glasgow Science Centre.
The event was aimed at congratulating the clients and showcasing the positive impact that the FNP has on young families. Past and present clients benefited from free access to the Science Centre exhibits and the planetarium for a fun family day out.

The event was attended by the Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Humza Yousaf MSP. He congratulated the clients on what they had achieved throughout the programme and thanked the Family Nurses and Supervisors for their dedication and commitment.

Mike Burns, our Health and Social Care Partnership’s (HSCP) Assistant Chief Officer for Children’s Services and North East Locality Operations gave closing remarks and talked about the importance of the FNP and about how having an early intervention approach can make a difference in people’s lives.

Anne Burns, FNP Service Manager said: “FNP has helped improve the lives of young mothers and given their children that vital support that’s needed in the first thousand days of their lives. There have been some amazing outcomes from this programme. We’re really proud to be able to empower young women from a diverse range of backgrounds and have a positive impact in their family lives.”
