Glasgow City HSCP marks Black History Month
October is National Black History Month, which celebrates and reflects on the rich history of Black culture, innovation, and revolution.
This encompasses the history of African, Caribbean and Asian people in this country; people who often have a direct link with Scotland through slavery, colonialism and migration. Black History Month focuses on people whose sacrifices, contributions and achievements against a backdrop of racism, inequality and injustice are often forgotten about.
This year’s theme for Black History Month is ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’. The theme is a powerful tribute to the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across the globe. This year, the theme highlights the profound contributions made by Black people be they leaders, activists, or pioneers who have shaped history, while also looking towards a future of continued empowerment, unity, and growth.
To mark Black History Month, a number of learning opportunities and events took place throughout the month in Glasgow.
The Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights provided a range of thought provoking and engaging events in Glasgow including tours, talks, exhibitions, workshops, and films. For more information you can have a look at their programme of events.
Leading to Change hosted two online webinars focused on learning more about anti-racism in leadership and a session dedicated to identifying microaggressions at work and how to best approach this in the workplace.
Fiona Moss, our Health and Social Care Partnership’s (HSCP) Head of Health Improvement and Equalities said: “Black History Month is an important marker for Glasgow, our staff and those that use our services. Glasgow is a city rich with history, and we continue to have a responsibility to learn about the impact that Black people have had in our city. This month is an opportunity to learn, reflect, and acknowledge the contributions, struggles and achievements of Black communities—past and present.”
