Stories from Glasgow: Celebrating community voices
A new exhibition, Stories from Glasgow, is now open, showcasing powerful mixed media work created by Glasgow based artists to celebrate the voices of children, young people and families from across the city’s booster wards: Calton, Govan and Govanhill.
This insightful exhibition marks the culmination of a unique project developed by Arts in the City, one of our Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership’s (HSCP) initiatives designed to support and improve access to arts and cultural opportunities for individuals with lived experience of care. The project has also been created in collaboration with Glasgow City Council as part of the Glasgow 850 celebrations, Wasps Studios and many other partners.
Through artist led workshops, Stories from Glasgow engaged with residents in Glasgow’s booster wards to explore personal and shared stories using collage, print, photography, sound, writing and graffiti. Booster wards are areas experiencing the highest levels of child poverty, and are the focus of the Glasgow Child Poverty Programme’s preventative, place based interventions.
Rather than presenting these neighbourhoods through statistics or deficit based narratives, the exhibition centres the creativity, knowledge and agency already present within them.
This work is a strong example of partnership working, bringing together artists, community organisations and public services to create space for people to express themselves in their own way. Care and consent were central throughout the project, including offering anonymity to participants who needed it, helping ensure everyone could take part safely and confidently.
Stories from Glasgow is a fantastic demonstration of our HSCP’s commitment to supporting children and families through community based approaches.
Members of the public are warmly encouraged to visit and experience the exhibition for themselves.
