Update on the New Parkhead Hub
An improved health and social care facility for people in the North East of Glasgow has moved a step closer. Building work on the new Parkhead Hub started on site in March 2022 and it’s due to open in 2024.
The Hub is being built on the site of the former Parkhead Hospital and current Sandyford, Anvil Centre and Parkhead Health Centre at Salamanca Street.
Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership’s (HSCP) new Hub will bring together a number of community health and social care services, which are currently located at nine different sites. The Hub will also include General Practitioner, community pharmacy and specialist dental services. The facility will also provide community spaces including bookable rooms, the relocated Parkhead library and a café.
Dominique Harvey, our HSCP’s Head of Planning for Children’s Services and North East Locality, said: “A programme of public engagement activities about the Hub began in March 2017 and continues to roll out with recent information sessions being held recently at Auchenshuggle and Parkhead Community Council meetings. An information stand about the Hub was also on show at a Thriving Places networking event held at the Emirates Stadium in January 2023.”
Members of the local community have been surprised at how quickly the building work is progressing. Parkhead Community Council Chairperson, John Ferguson, said: “Now that the work is underway and people can see the shape and design of the building they want to know more about the services that will be based at the facility so it's important to keep them informed about how the work is progressing.”
A creative arts programme is also underway for the new Parkhead Hub. Through an open application process launched in September 2022, artists were invited to apply to design two large scale art commissions at the Hub site. One is for the new entrance area, which connects the Hub to Duke Street, and the other is for the Hub’s integrated children’s area, which opens out onto a landscaped courtyard.
Jackie Shearer, the Hub’s Arts Strategy Coordinator said: “We received a high number of diverse and exciting applications, from which five artists and designers were selected to move forward to Stage Two of the commissioning process and provide more detailed designs. It’s anticipated that the outcome of the process will be finalised by the end of February 2023.”
There will be opportunities for community groups to get involved with a creative arts programme over 2023. The intention is that a range of artwork will be displayed throughout the Hub for the enjoyment of both the community using and visiting the facility, alongside the staff based there.
