In September 2023 Glasgow City Integration Joint Board (IJB) approved a plan to implement a Safer Drug Consumption Facility in Hunter Street Health and Social Care centre.

Safer drug consumption facilities (SDCFs) are clean, hygienic environments where people can consume drugs, obtained elsewhere, under the supervision of trained health and social care professionals, reducing the risk of overdose and infectious diseases whilst offering support and access to healthcare and social care services.

In Glasgow City we have 140 GP surgeries, hosting around 617 GPs, in addition to other clinical staff, caring for 791,000 registered patients. Each GP surgery has a Practice Manager who is vital to the successful running of the surgery. They manage the business aspect of the surgery, making sure that patients are at the centre of the surgery's operations.

Safer drug consumption facilities (SDCFs) are supervised healthcare settings where you can consume your own drugs, obtained elsewhere, under the supervision of trained health and social care professionals, in clean, hygienic and safe environments reducing the risk of overdose.

You will receive a compassionate service which focuses on reducing the harms associated with injecting drug use and will be given the opportunity, if desired, to access other support services.

Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) is working with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) and other partners to develop a pilot Safer Drug Consumption Facility (SDCF). This will be the first Safer Drug Consumption Facility in Scotland and the United Kingdom.

Progress with the Construction

Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership’s (HSCP) new Parkhead Hub Health and Care Centre construction is progressing well. The building is now wind and watertight and the Main Contractor BAM is making good progress with the building services and internal fit-out. Many of the standard rooms are now substantially complete with the contractor now focusing their efforts on the circulation, atria and courtyard spaces.
