The development of competencies for Occupational Therapists (OTs) working across health and social care in Glasgow City HSCP has again been highlighted as an example of good practice, with a feature in the August 2020 edition of OT News. This is a membership only publication from the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
Virtual Baby Group Supports New Parents
With the outbreak of COVID 19, Glasgow City HSCP’s Children and Families Health Visiting Teams in South Glasgow have adapted practice to meet the needs of families. This has included new and innovative ways of working.
When Scotland was put into lock down, new mums and new-borns had limited contact with the outside world. The teams worried that the lack of support for families may lead to feelings of isolation, potentially increasing mental health problems for new mothers which has a negative impact on infant health.
Concerns about Impact of Pandemic on Mental Health
Concerns about an increase in mental health problems prompted by the pandemic has sparked calls for people to talk about their feelings more.
Loneliness, social isolation, fears for job security, bereavement, grief, financial worries and anxiety about Coronavirus are all issues which people may have struggled with during lockdown and Glasgow's Suicide Prevention specialists fear that the impact on people's mental health may become increasingly apparent in coming months.

New Advice and Support Centre for Homeless People
A brand-new multi-agency advice and support hub for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness was opened on 24 September in Glasgow’s Argyle Street. This ground breaking initiative is expected to radically reshape the experience and impact for people at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness in Glasgow.
Happy Halloween at Leverndale Hospital
Since the onset of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in March, the Recreational Therapy Department has been closed and Recreational Therapy staff have been offering an outreach service within Leverndale Hospital.
The department plans to have a monthly ‘theme’ in an attempt to enhance the community spirit in these difficult times.
Glasgow City HSCP Pharmacist wins at National Conference
Leanne Black, Advanced Prescribing Support Pharmacist won the poster prize at the recent Scottish Practice Pharmacist & Prescribing Advisers Association Conference, held virtually on 28 October 2020.
Leanne works in Glasgow City HSCP’s North West Locality and is chair of the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Pharmacy Care Home Group. The poster summarised the work undertaken to conduct medication reviews via video link with care home residents using NHS Near Me (Attend Anywhere). Attend Anywhere is a web-based platform that allows video call access to NHS services.
Staff at Balmore Ward Donate Christmas Presents to Women’s Aid
Generous Glasgow City HSCP staff working in Balmore Ward at Leverndale Hospital decided this year to forego the usual staff tradition of giving presents to each other by Secret Santa and instead donated their presents to the women and children being supported by Renfrewshire Women’s Aid.
The amount of presents collected shows that staff clearly went way beyond what they would normally purchase for each other.

Over the festive period all public social work offices will remain open between 08:45am to 4.45pm (Monday to Thursday) and 08.45am to 3.55pm (Friday) but will be closed on the following public holidays:
