World Alzheimer’s Month – raising awareness of dementia and support

World Alzheimer’s Month 2025 in September took place to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. World Alzheimer’s Day takes place on 21 September every year.

Staff at Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) hosted dementia awareness drop-in sessions over the month in local health and care centres. These were well received by local people.

Sandyford specialised sexual health services recently took part in Scottish Learning Disability week 2025 in September. The service pledged to “listen and learn from people with learning disabilities.” This is part of an ongoing programme of work with adults with a learning disability to have a positive relationship and sexual health experience.

Spotlight on Falls Awareness Week 2025

Injuries caused by falls are a leading cause of hospital admission and death for those aged over 75. On average, there are over 4,000 hospital admissions in Glasgow each year due to a fall.  

Recognising the devastating impact falls can have on people, during Falls Awareness Week 2025, in September, Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) staff organised a range of activities to raise awareness among staff and the public on how to prevent falls.

Prevent is one of four strands of the UK’s Counter Terrorism Strategy along with Pursue, Protect and Prepare. Prevent aims to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. Prevent also includes supporting the rehabilitation and disengagement of those already involved in terrorism.

The week’s theme was ‘I am Here’ and staff encouraged service users, carers and families, as well as staff in our Learning Disability teams, to get involved and share their views.  

Embracing person-led models of care in our residential homes

Staff from Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP)’s care homes have been taking part in the University of Stirling, Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC)’s ‘Effective Leadership for Dementia Care Services’ course.

Around 83% of our residents are living with a dementia, highlighting the importance of ensuring our leadership and care approaches are aligned with best practice. This training will strengthen our understanding and practice of effective leadership within dementia care.

Glasgow City HSCP Staff champion British Sign Language awareness

Staff across our Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) are helping make our services more inclusive by learning British Sign Language (BSL) and raising awareness of its importance in our city.

Recently, a group of colleagues successfully achieved their Signature Level 1 in BSL, and another cohort has recently completed a six-week taster course where they learnt basic BSL communication skills useful for work and gained cultural awareness of the Deaf community.
